Presentations

A cancer survivor with advanced degrees in public health (MPH) and Psychology (MA), and with years of experience as a workshop facilitator and conference speaker, Janie has a unique perspective which will be of interest to patients, their friends and families, as well as health care and social service professionals. Her presentations, which she tailors to her audience, reflect an approach that, like her writing, is both direct and compassionate, and often leaves folks laughing. Below are examples of the topics she covers:

Bone Marrow Boogie: Designing my own healing dance:

This address relates Janie's personal journey with B-Cell lymphoma. Upon learning of her diagnosis, Janie embraced her experience and designed her own healing dance, incorporating complementary therapies into her conventional treatment plan, staying present to herself and reaching out to others. This uplifting and inspirational talk encourages people with cancer and their loved ones to find a balance in approaching cancer treatment and to choreograph a dance that works for each individual. It is equally appropriate for health care providers of all persuasions as they seek to enhance the healing experience of their patients.

Bone Marrow Boogie: The Dance of a Lifetime:

This talk focuses specifically on Janie's unique perspective on facing a life-changing event. Her decision to embrace her experience with cancer diverged significantly from the usual response. Rather than 'kill' her cancer, she chose to transform it. Janie will talk about remaining present and alive during a time of crisis, about staying in relationship with herself and others. She will address specific meditations and energy treatments, emphasize ways that she cared for her body, mind, and spirit throughout the process. This is an appropriate talk for any audience interested in facing life head-on, regardless of one's individual situation.

Bone Marrow Boogie: This Body is my Home:

In this talk, Janie advocates taking personal responsibility for one's health care, utilizing her professional background as a mental health therapist, consultant, and cancer survivor. She will address how she was able to overcome doubt and find inspiration, give specific tactics to find support and cultivate the tools needed to cope. Specifically for persons with health issues and their loved ones, and others interested in taking charge of their health care, this talk will send a powerful message of possibility and hope.
